The main body of the collection of artifacts kept at the museum has been donated to the Bitter Root Valley Historical Society over a number of years. Many Pioneer Families have contributed to the collection, including a wide variety of objects that were collected and donated by Henry Grant, who was affectionately known locally as ‘Mr. Bitterroot.’ His Bitter Root China Collection is usually on display annually during Bitter Root Days. Some of the other items on display are on loan from various contributors.
Items included in our permanent collection include Native American artifacts from local tribes such as the Salish, Nez Perce, and Kootenai Indians. Also included in the collection is a fine array of Anasazi Pots, some dating from the pre-Columbian period. Other items included in the collection are agricultural tools and implements, military uniforms and accessories dating from the Civil War era to Operation Desert Storm. A large collection of Victorian Era household fixtures, dry goods, vintage clothing, portraits and paintings, and various other articles make up the bulk of the holdings. |
