Voices from the Little Big Horn, with Tim Lehman

Sponsored by Humanities Montana

Thursday, July 5th, 2012 6-7:30pm

Chief Sitting Bull

The Battle of the Little Big Horn, popularly known as Custer's Last Stand, stands as an iconic episode in the history of the American West. Yet many aspects of the battle are poorly understood. Using records from popular culture—newspaper accounts, films, paintings, and poems—Lehman explores the traditional myth of Custer's Last Stand and offers a fresh interpretation using recent battlefield archaeology and a new appreciation of Indian accounts. Blending popular culture and traditional history, the presentation shows how myth and history blend in understanding our stories of the American West.

Tim Lehman of Billings, Mont., Professor of History at Rocky Mountain College, will briefly present recent views about the battle in its multicultural context, and he will encourage audience participation in a discussion about how our evolving understandings of this history can shape contemporary life.
